Hi Roger,

Your screen reader is not going to say 11/2 if there is a space between the
1's in the fraction 1 1/2.  I think the space is fine.  It just isn't always
put in by proofreaders.

Like I said, with a screen reader putting a space only between the whole
number and the fraction can make it unclear whether what is being read is
one and a half or eleven halves. A hyphen would work for me at least. That
does not adhere strictly to the print copy though, so I am not quite sure it
is allowed.
