Actually, what my screen reader says is one one slash two. It does frequently read a string of digits as digits instead of as a single number. For example, 1917 is often read as one nine one seven rather than nineteen seventeen or one thousand nine hundred seventeen and that can sometimes lead to uncertainty unless I slow it down and make it read one character at a time. That is why it seems to me that a hyphen would remove that uncertainty. Let me add, though, that I do not have much interest in recipe books. Nevertheless, I have proofread some because they seemed to be pretty easy. It was later that I learned on this list that the fractions can be messed up by the OCR and those errors are not necessarily readily apparent. So since I am not particularly interested in them anyway I stopped proofreading recipe books. It does worry me, though, that the ones I did proofread might now be in the collection with false information in them.

Hi Roger,Your screen reader is not going to say 11/2 if there is a space between the 1's in the fraction 1 1/2. I think the space is fine. It just isn't alwaysput in by proofreaders. A hyphen would work for me at least. Thatdoes not adhere strictly to the print copy though, so I am not quite sure itis allowed. _ _ _ "Socialism is an attack on poverty." - W. E. B. There is a space between the whole number and the fraction. When listening to that with a screen reader, though, it is not always apparent that the space is there unless one slows down the screen reader to spell it out. I suppose in a recipe it is not likely that one will come across eleven halves, but other fractions may not be so apparent. That makes me wonder if it would be good to come up with some way to seperate the whole number from the fraction so that a screen reader would read theseperation._ _ _ "Socialism is an attack on poverty." - W. When I see fractions, the slash goes between the numerator and the denominator without spaces. Hope this helps. Regards, Kim Friedman. For Braille readers, is the 1 / 2 format better than the symbol 1 over 2 in one individual space (sorry I can't make this symbol in e-mail). Any preference?
