HI:

I am one of those validators who tends to delete headers. By headers I mean title and author. I do my best to protect cjhapter titles, prologues, epilogues, and parts or any kind of section title intended by the author. I protect them by putting in the page number on the first line. However, if the number is on the bottom I put in the title of book on first line, skip a blank line and then the chapter title. I got that little trick from Jake. Now in a cook book the headers are important in order to protect the recipe titles and so it would be common sense to leave it alone.

One thing I'd like to have clarified, because I usually don't validate,
is it one of the steps in the validation process to delete headers and
footers or is it something people do by choice? Seems to me it's a part
of the book. Also, why take the time to delete them if the stripper's
going to do it? Also, if I understood things correctly, a copy of the
validated book is kept before it is subjected to a stripping, so why are
we removing things from the books?

Just trying to sort out this whole issue and appreciate the help!

Maybe you could say I'm stripping away the confusion at least that I
have about this whole issue.

Thanks!

Charlene

Sighted readers, too, Mike and Charlene. Except for dictionaries and encyclopedias, I never realized they had a function, as I never utilized them. For nonfiction, I always used the index, and for both nonfiction and fiction, I used the table of contents if I wanted to get to a particular chapter or section.

Then I suppose when I'm validating now, at least until bookshare decides what to do, I should leave the headers but make sure they're not garbled and put the page number on a separate line in case the header gets stripped. But I suppose you're talking about chapter headers. Do author or book title headers serve any purpose, or should I continue to delete them?

Cindy

Perhaps if blind readers were better educated as to
how books were
constructed and why particular info were included,
they might be less
opposed to them.
