I may not remember Deborah's suggestion for footnote numbers correctly, but I 
thought it was asterisk, number, continue text or next sentence.  , e.g.,  
Version:1.  of his own name.*9  legalization  ...
  875.*7     [symbol indicating end f paragraph]
