    You're not using Norton Personal Firewall on the laptop by any chance are 
you?
    I have that problem when i have Norton personal firewall enabled.  i always 
have to disable it to download books for validation and also when i need to 
upload or renew.  
    If you're not running a Norton Personal Firewall then it might be some 
other security setting specific to the laptop.  That's what immediately comes 
to mind anyway.

    That reminds me, while i'm discussing this little issue with Norton... 
anybody know if there's a way to keep the personal firewall enabled and still 
be able to renew/upload books and download books for validation??  I'm 
relatively new to using Norton's Firewall so i'd appreciate any tips.
