Hi Reggie, I think that we as scanners and proofers are supposed to put in a blank line to protect the chapter heading, but the Bookshare tools will take it out before the book goes into the collection. I hope that this is right? Marty

So is the consensus that no longer will we put a blank line after the
chapter title? That is fine with me. It would then be page break, page
number (if at the top), chapter one or title and text? At the bottom it is
last line of text, page number (if at the bottom), and page break? Then
chapter titles are put in 16-point, which is the way I do it anyway.

A single asterisk may strike you as a stray character, but it preserves the
blank line, which is what it is intended for. Three asterisks in a book has
a specific purpose, to indicate change of scene or passage of time. Besides,

a single asterisk wouldn't strike you as a stray character for very long if
you encountered it consistently between a chapter title and the text.

A single asterisk would strike me as a stray character. Three of them in a
row tells me that they are meant to be there.

Hmmm, I'm wondering why use three asterisks at all. Wouldn't one be
sufficient to preserve a blank line? Why not just use the three asterisks

for changes of scene or passage of time, which is what print books do
anyway. That is, when they use asterisks rather than bullets or some
graphic for the same purpose, which can be rendered as three asterisks
for Bookshare. Using three of them seems a bit of overkill just to
preserve a blank line between a chapter title and the text.

Hi Angel,
You can also put in 2 blank lines one after the other, go to the blank

line just under the chapter heading, type 3 asterisks, then arrow down
instead of hitting enter.

I'm not in favor of putting the stars after the chapter number, but you
would go to the blank line under the chapter/title, make sure the line
is in
12-point font. I think the easiest way to do it is to type for stars *,
then go to the beginning of the line and backspace once, which takes out

the
one Word automatically changes to a bullet.

Hi Angel,

If you're just looking for the chapter and title to be sure they're in

16point bold, hit control with F, type in Chapter, and then "find
next." When you get to the next spot, hit Escape, check it out, then
do it again.

that I would like to ask. Is, Is there a faster way to move from
chapter to chapter using Microsoft word 2007?

I recently started proofreading a book in which the first four lines

of a
chapter had:

blank line
Chapter 1
* * *
These are the first words of the first paragraph.

The chapter 1 and the three asterisks are all in 16 point bold and
the first
words of the paragraph are in 12 point. This as it should be.

Here's my question:

We have recently been told to put the triple asterisks after the
chapter
name. This is all new to me because for so many years we were told
to put a
blank line to protect the Daisy navigation. It seems
counterproductive to me
to put the triple asterisks were there should be a blank line. Also,

I would
think that the Bookshare tool would bring those asterisks up to the
same
line as the Chapter 1. The Bookshare tool does not like chapter
names of the
same font size to be on separate lines, so it will bring them up
onto a
single line. But that leaves you without a blank line to separate
all the
chapter stuff from the paragraph.

Why can't we just leave off the triple asterisks? Much simpler and
much
cleaner. And we don't have to worry about what the Bookshare tool is

going
to do. Also, wouldn't you rather listen to just the words than to
hear your
book reader telling you * * *?

Thanks,
- Doug
