how hard or easy is it to develop an application file like this? Will we need one for Samplitude?

Ben,

This is a limitation of the documentation. Once you’ve set up your surface using the correct ports and protocol, it’s a good idea to see if there’s an application configuration file available for your DAW of choice. If you’re using Sonar, then there is and you can select it by using the Load App Config option in the Surfaces menu. An application Configuration configures SurfaceReader’s responses to particular actions (like the lighting of lamps, etc.), so you’ll get the feedback you’re after.

Tim, thanks for being there. I just made a test using NVDA. This really works. I can hear speech feedback.
Of course I'd like to use it with Jaws eventually so that I can use the HSC sets.
But there is just one question I have for you: When I arm a track on my mackie I hear record ready. But when I disarm it I get the same message. I still can see a bit so I see the small lights turning on or off. But can surface reader recognize the difference and give a different message if a track is getting armed or disarmed?

Ben,

Glad you’re up and running and apologies for not being around earlier.

Phil - thanks for doing my tech support for me:)

The CPU hit caused by SurfaceReader is due to a bad design choice I made right at the start of the project, so it needs a rewrite of one of the major modules. Another major module - the one that handles speech - is also slated for a rewrite, so there’s a fair bit to do. The speech rewrite isn’t to do with any bug we’ve detected, though fixing it up for later versions of Jaws will get rolled into the new code. The main reason for rewriting speech is to turn it into an independent module that anybody can call from their own code - it’ll be a .dll under Windows or a .dylib or .a on the Mac.

Best wishes.

Hey Ben.  You are very welcome!  Always happy to help out if I can
:-) Sorry to say that you won't get any spoken feedback from Surface
Reader currently under Jaws 16 as something has changed in Jaws 16
and Tim hasn't had time to debug the issue yet.  What you could do
though is uninstall Jaws
16 then install Jaws 15 and 16 again.  In other words, if you are
running Jaws 15 or below then, you will get spoken feedback from
Surface Reader.
Also, if you register Samplitude E.G. extend the trial for a month
then you can download a patch and patch it up to version 13.1.3.176
(DC2).  Don't just updated it though.  Download the patch from the
Magix download centre.
If you automatically update it then you will be running a later
version of Samplitude however, that patch has some issues where by
some strange characters are spoken in edit fields etc.  BTW, Magix
are aware of the issue and it's been prioritised for a fix.
Finally, running Samplitude Pro X2 suite here and I must say hats
off to Steve Spamer and Tim Burgess for the Jaws scripts and HSC
solution.  It really is very stable.  Just working out a few final
issues before these come out of beta then you can all use them.

...

I probably didn't restart my PC after installing the LoopBe30 Midi

I dare to say, that it almost is working. The faders are moving when
I create a new Project in Samplitude. but I don't hear any speech
when I press par example the buttons for selecting or arming tracks
on my mackie.
In the surface reader there is a voice menu where one can mute
speech. but It's not checked, so I should hear something, right?

Just for the record: I've got Jaws 16.0 on a Swiss German Windows 7
Professional 64-bit system. Samplitude is Pro X2 Suite 13.1.0.131
(DC2), Trial version.
First I turn my pc on, then the mackie MCu Pro control surface,
after this I open the surface reader, ant last comes Samplitude.

Hi Ben,

I use a free utility called LoopMIDI. The following instructions are
for a BCF2000, LoopMIDI, Surface Reader, and sonar. So, you may need
to modify the instructions slightly. Where it says BCF2000, think
Mackie Control. (grin)

I got the following help from Rui Vilarinho <<mailto:ruialby@xxxxxxxxxxx>ruialby@xxxxxxxxxxx> I
think it should be added to the Surface Reader documentation, as
this whole virtual ports thing seems to be a bit of a head-scratcher
for us. It sure was for me! I've edited it some for clarity, but
feel free to change anything if you think it would be easier for
people to follow.

Using the BCF2000, Surface Reader, and your DAW:

You need three things installed and working.

First, grab a copy of LoopMIDI from
<http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html>http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html
and install it. This is used to set up two virtual MIDI ports.  As
it says on the page, the ports are only active as long as LoopMIDI
is running - note that closing its window minimizes it to the System
Tray but it remains active.  You also have the option to have
LoopMIDI run at Windows log on.

Second, you need to have the BCF2000 plugged in, turned on, and in
Mackie emulation mode.

Third, you need to have Surface reader installed. It's available from:

In the Setup tab of LoopMIDI, make sure you have two virtual ports listed.
Add them with the plus and minus buttons if necessary.  LoopMIDI
will probably default to numbering these 0 and 1, but you can change
their names to 1 and 2. Name them anything you wish.

If you have already configured your DAW to work with the BCF2000,
you need to tell your DAW to use the virtual ports, not the physical
ones on the BCF2000. With 2 virtual MIDI ports defined in LoopMIDI,
go to your DAW and disable the BCF
2000 MIDI device input and output assignments.
Instead, select your first Virtual MIDI port as input and the second
virtual MIDI port as output.

Configure Surface Reader with the following settings.
In Hardware Properties:
Set input to BCF2000 port 1.
Set output to your first virtual midi port.

In Display Properties:
Set Input to your second virtual midi port.
Set Output to BCF2000 port 1.

NOTE: The above assumes you are using the BCF2000's USB port for
MIDI communication, meaning both port numbers are the same.  If,
however, you are using the MIDI in and out jacks on the BCF2000,
you will have distinct names for input and output.

At 09:26 AM 6/4/2016, you wrote:

Hi all

If someone out there has experience with the surface reader from
raised
bar: I'm trying to set this up for my Mackie MCU Pro with Sonar
and Samplitude. I purchased the virtual Midi Cables LoopBe30.
But now I'm stuck. I'm not sure how these virtual cables must be
connected. The Help Tutorial in Surface Reader sadly doesn't give
any examples for LoopBe30.
So, if anyone got it working and is willing to give me some
pointers (probably off list) I'd be very grateful.
