Hi Phil,

It does sound a lot of hard work, however there are reasons for my seemingly
mad EQ obsession when performing live.
Some of the old Theatres need EQ has they wasn't really designed for large
PA application, they have very high ceilings and nothing to dampen the
overall sound.
The other extreme is certain clubs that have very low ceilings and are
heavily furnished.
The EQ changes are sultle but affective.

The reason for EQ on the microphone is to recreate that 1950's microphone
sound like what Jerry Lee Lewis would have used at Sun Studio.
it's not easy recreating that sound without EQ as there were some very
strange frequences that recorded on the vocal sound at Sun Studio which gave
records such as "Great Balls of fire" such a magic live feel.

Phil replied: sheesh, that's a lot of hard work. Am able to leave my
backing tracks flat on the desk when playing live. Then, just have to
take
out a little of the lows and sweep the mid on the vocals a bit to sweeten
up
the sound. Never use a 32 band EQ, just the parametric on the board and
that's enough. Mind you do use a DBX 1066 compressor on the vocals which,
does an excellent job.

Hi Chris,

I'm used to using hardware when performing live. I use a 16 band EQ to
help
get the best overall sound for all the instruments and a 15 band on the
microphones.
I'm used to using sliders and that's why I like the access to the
frequency
levels on the Sonitus.
The sonitus vintage EQ however only has 6 frequency levels.
I want more control over the overall sound as I have some studio projects
that I'm trying to get as close as possible to a Mastering house finish.
I'm Using limiter effects, compressors and equalisers. It's a very time
consuming game trying to get that Pollished production sound, especially
as
it's not really my bag.

I too guess I'm going to have to learn how different EQ curves sound and
how
to get these mmuch more precisely with the Sonitus EQ.,

Thanks Chris,
Steve W

I'm curious why you need so many bands.

With a large graphic equalizer, several bands are used to create slopes,
bell curves, and other shapes, that you can do with a single band in
something like the per Track EQ or the Sonitus EQ.

There is a 20-band graphic EQ in Sony Sound Forge, and we have access to
it in that program. Honestly though, once I learned how different EQ
curves sounded and how to get these mmuch more precisely with the Sonitus
EQ, I have almost never used the 10 or 20-band graphic EQ in Sound forge.
