Working with a dedicated MIDI module, before getting in to softsynths, is
definitely easier.
If you have CakeTalking 8 or later, then, during install, it should have
asked you to specify the default template that you'd like to use when
starting new projects. Unless you change it, the default template will be
loaded, and new projects will start out with 16 MIDI tracks controlling a
single instance of TTS-1. This is a very close emulation of what it would
be like if you were using basic MIDI, with a Roland Sound Canvas module
connected to your computer. With a synth/module like this, you can control
the patch (instrument voice) very simply from the track properties dialog.
To open track properties for the current track, just press the letter p.
I know that everyone is always eager to install the software, and
immediately start loading softsynths and effects, but you need to master
the fundamentals first, or you'll be hopelessly lost, not sure why you did
what you did in order to get a synth to load. That's dangerous because
this is, after all, a computer, things go wrong from time-to-time, and, if
you're just following steps, instead of understanding what you're doing,
then any time that something doesn't work exactly like you expect, your
steps become useless, and you have no clue what to do in order to fix it.
Start with the default template. Learn how to select instrument voices for
each track. Learn how to record. Learn how to perform basic editing such
as how to erase a track, how to cut, copy, and paste material, how to
quantize, etc. Learn how to perform basic mixing by adjusting the volume
and pan controls for the tracks, and how to render your project to an
audio file (WAV or MP3), that you can burn to CD or share with others.
Once you actually know how to record, edit, mix, and render a project,
then you can try to make a better project by slowly adding in other
elements, one at a time. Perhaps you might try learning how to record
audio, and combine that with your MIDI composition. Next, you might try
adding effects to some of the tracks. After that, you might still use
mostly the TTS-1's MIDI tracks, but you might add another synth to the
project in order to get a specialized sound that it produces well.
Eventually, you might be using other synths entirely, no longer needing
the TTS-1. Jumping in to that from the start, though, is a great way to
get confused and frustrated.

I don't know any specific information on accessing the RXP dialog. It
sounds like you're trying to fly before you can walk.
Have you read the 4 chapters on MIDI hardware and software? That's very
basic training for understanding MIDI.
If you do have a hardware synth connected to your computer it's a lot
easier to work with to learn MIDI from the start.
Otherwise, start experimenting with the Cakewalk TTS synths to learn how
to properly insert them onto your tracks.
Again the tutorial is very step-by-step on how to insert a synth.
There are other documents included with your installation that talk
specifically on accessing the dialogs of the various effects and synths.
You may find help there, as well.

CakeTalking documentation,
on how to do this. I followed it step-by-step and was able
to insert the
synth and make it work.
If you haven't tried this yet, you should, since you'll
probably get it
figured out faster than waiting for answers on the list.
After you've gone through it, then if you have specific
questions, they will
be easier to answer, and you'll have better chance to
understand the
technicality of the answers.
