Hi Bryan,
I admit that I am pretty much clueless when it comes to mapping midi
controllers.
I am happy to say that with the point in the right direction and advice from
your last email, I now have a knob assigned to midi pan (10 c c).
So, do you know where I could get a list of other C C numbers to assign
other functions and effects using Sonar 6.2 with M-Audio Axiom 49.

Thanks a lot for your help.
Stacy

Bryan,
You're the one who told me to do the bottom left, bottom right buttons on
the keypad back when I got my Axiom 49. You might recall that this reset
sorted out the problem and didn't wipe anything out.

Warning warning warning!

If you reset your Axiom with this procedure, you will completely empty out
its preset memory! The only way to restore the presets is with the M-Audio
software, which isn't particularly accessible.

This *is* a very accessible controller.

Suppose you want a knob to control MIDI pan.

1. Press the control set button (top row, second from the right, I think).
2. Move the knob you'd like to assign.
3. Type 10 on the keypad (this means MIDI CC message 10).

You're done.

Granted, you still need to know a little something about MIDI CC messages,
and which ones your synths and plug ins will respond to, but you need to
know that for many controllers. The difference with the Axiom is that you
don't need to use a dial and two buttons, or inaccessible PC software, to
remap the controls. That actually makes it possible for you to map the
controls, though I didn't say that working with controllers would be
simplistic.

To really work in Sonar with a controller, you need to be able to use ACT.
However, my current opinion about ACT is that it is a great concept with
practically no ready-to-go implementation on controllers. It isn't
reasonable for Cakewalk to expect that novice users will have the time to
map their MIDI controller's controls to ACT controls, and then go through
all of their plug ins and map the plug in's controls to ACT controls. That
takes a lot of time. Cakewalk does this for you on some gear, like the
V-Studio 700C control surface, but that is more money than most people on
this list are willing to spend.

Well I don't think a factory reset is the issue. But, if you want to reset
the Axiom, press the bottom left and bottom right buttons on the numeric key
pad over on the left (at the same time) then turn the Axiom off (at the
back) then turn it back on (with the 2 buttons still being held down for 10
seconds and then let go). The Axiom will then be reset to factory settings.

Since Dancing Dots is selling this midi controller and calling it
"accessible", I think it would be nice if there was a tutorial on how to set
it up to its full potential. I've had one for a year and a half and
basically gave up on assigning knobs and faders to effects etc. etc. and
just use it as a very basic midi controller.

I'd have no problem paying for an M-Audio Axiom lesson or tutorial if it was
made with the Sonar user in mind and especially if it was geared for CT
users!

Hmm, may be worth trying a factory reset on the unit before using it.
