Bryan: There's an axiom preset. Except sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't think it should be a factory reset issue since this is new, the other one wasn't but I replaced it. I agree it's an accessible controller, I was easily able to reprogram the trigger pads for drums, for example. The question is this. I made sure the right preset was loaded by picking the act1 controller from tools, loaded a project, and it worked like it was supposed to. The sliders controlled volumes for the first eight tracks, the knobs controlled pans for the first eight tracks, play and stop worked, etc. However when I reloaded a project nothing worked, and when I recalled memory preset 20 on the axiom, two sliders controlled master and effects bus volume, and two knobs controlled master and effects pan. Play and stop worked. Very different behavior than I was expecting.

In short, the question isn't, can I easily map controls? Yes, I know I can do that, and I really do appreciate it. The question is, am I going to have to map my controls everytime I run sonar? This is all for controller stuff, as opposed to keyboard functionality. It seems to work fine with instruments. My current suspicion is that I may have to load a different memory preset before using it to control any soft synths, and load 20 before controlling track volumes and such. But I thought this was the whole point of act? That it would figure out where I'm at and control things appropriately once I mapped the controls to the right midi messages? In other words, I pick the preset in sonar, make sure that memory preset has been loaded in the axiom, and sonar does what it says it will with the various controls? And this should all stay unless I change anything. Because the preset in sonar won't change, and if I don't change any settings before I power down the axiom, whatever settings are in memory location 20 will still be in effect. But what's happened is that the sliders that are supposed to control volume for tracks 1 and 2, for instance, have gotten remapped to what I assume is master bus and effects bus volume, respectively.

Again, I'm fairly sure that's the issue, something with act, because to do a drum pad, just to be sure it's sending the right stuff, I had to hit the pad, control assign, 147, one of the data buttons, and enter the number of the midi note I wanted. The point being, this is a bit more complicated and it worked fine. Which suggests that the axiom is working like it's supposed to. The fact that the sliders and knobs still control volumes and pans, just not the right ones, and that the transport controls still work, suggests that the axiom is still sending the midi messages sonar wants and remapping controls isn't the problem. That's why I'm trying to find out more about act, because it seems to be the issue, and not anything the axiom happens to be doing.

If you reset your Axiom with this procedure, you will completely empty
out its preset memory! The only way to restore the presets is with the
M-Audio software, which isn't particularly accessible.

This *is* a very accessible controller.

Suppose you want a knob to control MIDI pan.

1. Press the control set button (top row, second from the right, I
think).
2. Move the knob you'd like to assign.
3. Type 10 on the keypad (this means MIDI CC message 10).

You're done.

Granted, you still need to know a little something about MIDI CC
messages, and which ones your synths and plug ins will respond to, but
you need to know that for many controllers. The difference with the
Axiom is that you don't need to use a dial and two buttons, or
inaccessible PC software, to remap the controls. That actually makes it
possible for you to map the controls, though I didn't say that working
with controllers would be simplistic.

To really work in Sonar with a controller, you need to be able to use
ACT. However, my current opinion about ACT is that it is a great concept
with practically no ready-to-go implementation on controllers. It isn't
reasonable for Cakewalk to expect that novice users will have the time
to map their MIDI controller's controls to ACT controls, and then go
through all of their plug ins and map the plug in's controls to ACT
controls. That takes a lot of time. Cakewalk does this for you on some
gear, like the V-Studio 700C control surface, but that is more money
than most people on this list are willing to spend.

Well I don't think a factory reset is the issue. But, if you want to
reset
the Axiom, press the bottom left and bottom right buttons on the numeric
key
pad over on the left (at the same time) then turn the Axiom off (at the
back) then turn it back on (with the 2 buttons still being held down for
10
seconds and then let go). The Axiom will then be reset to factory
settings.

Since Dancing Dots is selling this midi controller and calling it
"accessible", I think it would be nice if there was a tutorial on how to
set
it up to its full potential. I've had one for a year and a half and
basically gave up on assigning knobs and faders to effects etc. etc. and
just use it as a very basic midi controller.

I'd have no problem paying for an M-Audio Axiom lesson or tutorial if it
was
made with the Sonar user in mind and especially if it was geared for CT
users!

Hmm, may be worth trying a factory reset on the unit before using it.

Upon further investigation, more weirdness. I load sonar, open an existing project. I hit play on the axiom, nothing. So I hit recall 20. Transport controls now work, but instead of each slider controlling a track volume, one controls what appears to be the master

bus volume and another controls the volume of the one effect I have
running.
Similarly, two of the knobs pan the master bus and the effect. The rest seem to do nothing. The standard sonar preset has the sliders as

volumes for tracks 1-8 and the knobs as pan controls for 1-8 as well.
At least that's what "m-audio axiom 49 preset 20" does.

At this point I'm thinking an act issue of some sort rather than the axiom, because the axiom controls work just fine. In fact they should

be sending the right messages since they control volumes and pans, just not the ones I'm expecting. Plus the transport controls are
working.
Anybody have any tips? A good explanation of how to use act? I'll be

registering and possibly calling M-audio as well, following on that whole letting vendors know idea posted here a few months ago. But considering I baffle the hell out of the jaws support people every single time I get in contact with them and it's about their own software, eh, I'll stick with at least asking here first, heh.
