Hi, I confirm that the stability of the hardware and the capacity to work
with a small lanency are very important.
To-day I have a fast track pro from M-audio, and I have a lot of
difficulties to run with a small latency necessary for a performance in real
time; the fast track pro very often stop to play; to avoid that I have to
increase the latency and the result is not compatible when you play piano
with a nice Kontakt sound of piano with a band recorded in Sonar.
Nevertheless, I have a powerful portable pc in W7 64 bits;
I decided to change but the choice is difficult to have at the same time:
- hardware stability
- very small latency
- USB 2 or 3 connectivity
- mdi in out ports
- 4 output lines + main output
- control pannel accessible with Jaws.
It seems after reading the different messages that the Focusrite would be
the best choice.
Could you confirm that?

You are missing 1 crucial component in the mix, and that is driver
stability. Yes, hardware wise the units might look the same, but also
investigate the drivers/software side of the equation. You could have the
best hardware unit on the market, but if the manufacturer has bad drivers or
doesn't update them often, you might find yourself in a pinch.
I can't really speak for Roland, as I've never owned any of their stuff, But
between Tascam, M-Audio, and Focusrite, I've had the best results with my
Focusrite. Not saying they are perfect, but I like how they tackle problems
in frequent updates (a few per year). M-audio for example took about 2 years
after win 7 came out to fix the issues, and even then took longer to fix
other issues. Once the drivers became stable it was too late for me, since I
had switched to the Pro40. Tascam drivers were good as well, and are
generally solid. Once working, m-audio drivers were solid as well, and the
fact that it was PCI gave it a better latency, but I can run my focusrite at
64 samples with no issues (though this greatly depends on your DAW system).
Other than drivers, remember that the pre-amps do matter, though as you
said, at this price point it might not make such a difference, but if you
are doing some detailed recordings, this might matter. There really is a
difference between a $200 pre-amp and a $1000 one :)
But as I stated in an earlier message, I've worked with a few people who use
the Roland capture series, and while I haven't heard anybody praising them
for much, I haven't heard many complaint about them either, so they are
probably a good buy, but that depends on your specific setup and needs.

I don't have this Card, but I have been doing a lot of research on it as in
my opinion the Focusrite sapphire cards and
roland quad capture seem to be the best for quickly packing up the mics,
cables and card along with my personal computer and hooking up the studio
anywhere.
They both also have the ability to take in two mics at a time and the Roland
has the ability to hook up Midi. The Roland also has 2 inputs with a preamp
and 2 without a preamp, so you can choose if you have an external preamp.
I haven't done much research on the Focusrite cards, but honestly I don't
think there is much difference between the two. When you are small, there
doesn't seem to be any difference in the sound, so it is then really up to
the nifty things each card has. I am really leaning towards getting the
Roland Quad for myself, but I'm going to look at a couple more Focusrite
cards first.
I would love to hear Focusrite users talk about their cards!
