Good morning Phil, I have been using Logic and GarageBand for the last year or
so, and it definitely deserves a good look at .
In fact I’m currently training and have designed the curriculum to the
application at my centre, and while there are some stumbling blocks, because
its just a matter of working out on how to do certain tasks, its definitely
going to be on my training block.
I have been in close contact with Apple and they in the last couple of builds
to Logic Have been making it more accessible.
You have to understand that the Mac and Windows are two different environments
and there is no way that VoiceOver can even compare with Jaws because its two
different screen reader technologies, and OS environments.
Apple’s approach to having the software developer make things accessible is the
right approach, and its about time that we take a stand to enforce this.
Apple’s accessibility page can give any software developer the tools to make
the softwares accessible, and seriously speaking because I’m taking a masters
degree in educational technology, there is no excuse in making a product
accessible right out of the box, and have us trainers just train the product lol
In fact I have been giving several talks to young designers out there to start
thinking about accessibility, and the response has been amazing
We are going to see in the next couple of years and I believe this a great
shift in accessibility, its just a matter of time and patients.
There are ways in navigating the mac which can make it easy to do tasks, and
you can certainly put in Windows spots which will allow you to get access to
areas that you need the most.
The recent version of Logic now has implemented tho insert sends, and audio and
midi effects which you can easily gain access to through the mixer console.
I just have to sit down and look at how to use the sends feature, and yes it
can be routed as well.
Apple does have a scripting language which is very powerful as well, and while
it doesn’t function in the same way as Jaws and hotspot clicker it can be set
to make your application work they way you want it too.
The sounds of the drums and basses are definitely of good quality that one can
present in a demo, and for work purposes.
The vocal effects like reverb and delay are amazing indeed, and you have access
to them, as well as the EQ.
I’m not trying to put any one down or be negative, , however Apple definitely
deserves a good look at it, and I don’t have a problem in working with their
music softwares as well as windows.
Ideally I think we should have both because this is what’s used in the
commercial studios which I have visited here in Montreal.
I have and will continue to use CakeTalking and Sonar, however I have been
using Mac products more and more, and they are a good way in which anyone who
is visually impaired can definitely work with it.
Seriously speaking, and this is always something which is hard for any one to
do if they are use to an environment, however I took a serious look at the
apple side and rehabilitated myself to work with it.
In actual fact I took sixth months off the Pc, and only used the PC at work,
and at home rehabilitated myself to work with the Mac, I started to understand
how it works, and how the navigation works as well.
In fact I use the mail app, do all of my word processing with Pages, and now
Word which has just become accessible, and internet browsing and use Logic, and
Garageband, I can seriously say that these tools work and you can seriously do
most of the expected tasks in recording and mastering.
In fact I do use the automation feature in Logic, and am able to automate
controls such as volume and pan using the regular keyboard.
There are older Mac’s of course which are a little slow in response, however
the new Mac’s with solid state drives, are definitely up there on the block,
and automation is now working fine.
I have been told by apple that the midi stuff for event list editing will soon
become accessible in the future, and this is something that Apple takes very
seriously, in fact I have been as I said early on been in close contact with
apple, and they welcome any feedback to their products.
Protools is a whole different world for even the sited person, so you can
imagine how it makes us work hard too.
While one might think things are slower than on the pc side, and or might think
that there are too many keystrokes, or too many windows to navigate, it doesn’t
take long to work with it and you can actually become quite efficient in
working on the Mac, its just a different way in which you have to rewire your
brain lol.
The point is that when something works on the Mac, it works and there are no
complications more hurdles to go through lol.
As a trainer and support specialist, I believe in both environments, and we
should not bash one or the other because its what makes our computing
experience what it is.
As I said earlier on, I will continue to use CakeTalking, and Sonar because
they are good products, however the apple stuff is on my block.
In fact your’s truly has something cooking in the burner, however I can’t say
at this point and time, and no matter how much you pay me, I wouldn’t talk lol.
You can get me drunk, or pamper me with a good dinner, or buy me a Gibson
lespaul, and I still wouldn’t talk lol.
Seriously speaking though, everything in life, and computing wether it be on
Mac or PC deserves a respectful look, and re look at.
Lets all be respectful out there, and not get angry when something doesn’t
work, its a matter of patients, and we need to be respectful of that because
Bill, David, and all the folks at apple and Dancingdots are doing there very
best to make it a better world experience for all of us.
If something doesn’t work, just take it easy, and things will certainly come
around.
Nothing in the world is perfect out there and unfortunately will never be
perfect, its what makes us humans lol.
I’d like to take the time to wish each and every one of you out there a very
happy valentines day, this is the day when we should all be there for one
another and love one another.

Phil replied: the disadvantage with Voiceover is that it is not a fully
fledged screen reader in the way that say Jaws is. Meaning you can't crawl

Chances are you either will see something or you won't. Also, there isn't a
scripting solution on the Mac side that works as well as say HotSpotClicker
and I have yet to find any DAW that comes close to giving you all round

HotSpotClicker sets. For example. Pro Tools on the Mac is great if you

from within the interface. Finally, expect the speed that you work at on
the Mac to be flushed somewhat down the toilet. Meaning whilst it's
certainly true that you can navigate around with Voiceover however, expect
to use 10 plus keystrokes to do the same thing as you would say using 1 or 2
keystrokes under Windows. Sure you can use control surfaces to speed up
functionality in apps such as Pro Tools however, that's not exactly a
portable solution :-)

Hi MIke, I am with you brother, I myself use both Sonar and Logic Pro, and
the two softwares makes me very independent, and I am also running a
business where I do recordings for clients.
I have to tell you that even Apple is not 100% however having the two
softwares gives me the independence that I love and appreciate each and
every day, as a trainer as well, and support specialist.
Derik, you have to understand that Dancingdots, and Freedom are trying there
very best to meet each and every one's needs, and what with all the
different config's and al that jazz, it's hard to meet and possibly be there
to solve all the issues in the world at once.
The advantage of Apple is that all the computers are built with basically
the same spec's and VoiceOver is built right in to the OS which makes it
easier to build accessible most of the time.
Once again, it's definitely not perfect.
I emailed you off list because I'm willing to try and help you to try and
resolve your issue if you want.
Once again I can certainly understand your frustration, however giving up is
not the answer.

Believe me, the CakeTalking tutorial is pretty damn good. Yes, this system
anyway. I'd have to say that his is probably the first real negative and
almost trashing I've read here of the work that Bill and the fine folks at
Dancing Dots along with David Pinto have done. There's obviously something
that's not set right on the machine that's effecting the performance of the
CakeTalking scripts. Before you head off the deep end, I think you need to
have somebody take a peak at the system to see what's going on. If you're
trying to run this stuff on Windows 8 or 10, you're already in the muck.
When I run the utilities in CakeTalking to fix things if I have a problem,
it "usually" takes care of it. I say "usually" because you might possibly
run into that rare occurrence where it doesn't fix it; then you have to
start doing some tracing to see what else could be going on. At that point,
for me, sometimes a little sighted help is needed; but it's not often.
That's a pretty damn good track record in my book.

Wow! There is someone out there in my situation. I have many of the
issues you said irratic jumping of selecting track parts, very unstable
Roland without speech than this stuff. I cannot duplicate part of tracks.
A couple times when it did do it it would put the copies wherever it seemed
to feel like it. Now after 4 months of Caketalk Cakewalk says they don't
support my version of Sonar. This is shady at best. I need support and
cannot find it. I may go back to my old way with sighted assistance. I can
hire someone to help eliminate the frustration. This Cakewalk is no
cakewalk for me from day one. It doesn't even do what the tutorial tells
you it does. How do you get in this racket of making money without
supporting those you sell to? I may just scrap the whole thing and start
over. Someday there will be enough blind people out there who are tired of
