I wonder if Virtual Audio Cable can also be used as a loopback software for
virtual instruments like FM Tines 2.0, which only seem to work in standalone
mode, as they freeze Sonar when in VST mode.

OK, please invest in software like virtual audio cable, which may do a better
job at what you want.
Or use a program like total recorder, which lets you record from the Windows
mixer directly.
Using an onboard sound card for this will lead to many problems, including hum,
EMI interference, bad/noisy audio, pops and crackles (if not configured
correctly) etc.
Using one of these alternatives is a far better deal for what you are trying to
accomplish.

I'm recording something off of Mozilla Firefox, which I can't exactly assign to
the MOTU unless the MOTU is the default soundcard in Windows. I'm not sure if
there's a way to make application specific assignments to sound devices within
the Control Panel. And if there is, I'm not sure why Microsoft hasn't shown
that yet, just the "Default Soundcard" assignment.

You really should have JAWS running through your built-in sound card, not
through the audio interface. Most JAWS synths run at a low sample rate of 22KHZ
or 32KHZ if you�re lucky, and the drivers sometimes get locked up trying to
work things about on multiple sample rates with different streams. Some drivers
are good at upscaling and dealing with it that way, others not so much.

DPC stands for deferred procedure calls, it is how Windows handles interrupts
and calls to the kernel and driver subsystem. Since Windows is not a real time
OS, it has to schedule these calls to handle access to resources. Having a high
latency between calls for the audio driver will result in dropped packets or
extra buffering by the drivers into memory, resulting in pops and crackles and
eventually drop outs.
It�s more complex than that, but I�m just giving you the simple basic
definition.
You may have a tool called DPC latency checker on your DAW, or you can
google/download it. It will allow you to check your system�s current DPC
latency. FYI, this tool is not accessible with JAWS, you�ll have to use the
JAWS cursor to read its output, or have a sighted person do it for you.

OK. You may be experiencing hardware issues, or your NVRAM was reset and your
firmware settings lost, thus you machine could be experiencing high DPC

It started happening in 2015, the moment I started updating Windows! Until that
day, I was able to record flawlessly with any devices I have. Which is why I'm
now going to run Windows without updates, since updating just messes everything
up and breaks compatibility with JAWS.

If by DAW you mean my computer, I've had it since September 2, 2011. The
graphics card I have is the AMD ATI Radeon HD5400 series, though I'm not sure
of the exact model. I also have the Intel HD Graphics 3000. One of those two is
my graphics card, and the other is my video card, which I think also has audio
features. I also have the Realtek High Definition Audio soundcard built in to
the machine.

When I'm either recording or playing audio within Sonar, JAWS sometimes seems
to fall asleep. Could it be that focus is lost? Why is the Focus Loss
Announcement turned off by default? How do I prevent this from happening? Also,
what can I do to prevent dropouts and stuttering, clicks and pops when
recording from my computer's internal soundcard into the MOTU 896HD?
