Hi Crhiss,
I wish I could help your community to answer to your questions. Alas, I have
myself a problem relating to Sonar. I have sent earlier an email to Jack Conti
who have a somehow similar problem: audio device unavailable for the current
software. Since last Tuesday, I cannot use SONAR 8.5.3.282 for CakeTalk scripts
8.8, which is on my Lenovo computer working under Windows 7 64-bits, for it
does not recognize my DAW. Each time I load SONAR, the following message
appears, even if my DAW (Yamaha USB Steinberg) is plugged and switched on:
"There are no audio devices for the current driver model on your system. Please
go to option vertical bar and choose a different audio model". Then I press OK
and another dialog box appears: "Silent bus is detected... The following tracks
and busses are currently assigned to a silent hardware output. The items listed
below will be silent in your project (EVERY CWP files, thus SONAR itself) until
their outputs are re-assigned to an appropriate hardware output." In the same
box, a read-only text displays the audio output, to which each track should
normally be assigned (soft synth for the midi tracks or the DAW's name for the
audio ones).
Then, I try to go to the audio options this time to verify the playback timing
master. Sadly, as no item is available, my DAW is not in the list. Then, I try
to press control and tab simultaneously to reach the drivers' tab, in which no
choice is present. I also should mention that I may have found somewhere else
other options of driver modes, but not that of my DAW.
I also should add that when SONAR is on, my laptop can still recognize the MIDI
input, Korg's NanoKey2, but not the audio interface (audio output). In other
words, a dialog box should appear for both items, whether connected or
disconnected. That been said, my computer does no longer synchronize to the DAW
on SONAR, meaning that the dialog box does not display anymore.
As using SONAR is impossible, I am wondering what I should do. do I need your
help to recover what is now lost (making my computer recognize the DAW)? do I
uninstall SONAR and its content and then reinstall that version of SONAR? Do I
update my laptop to Windows 10 and reinstall everything: including a newer
version of SONAR and the CakeTalk scripts? This is VERRY URGENT as I would like
to studio-record again.
Thank you.

Just curious, why are you recording through the built-in Realtech, and not your
MOTU interface?

You really should have JAWS running through your built-in sound card, not
through the audio interface. Most JAWS synths run at a low sample rate of 22KHZ
or 32KHZ if you?re lucky, and the drivers sometimes get locked up trying to
work things about on multiple sample rates with different streams. Some drivers
are good at upscaling and dealing with it that way, others not so much.

What about the problem of JAWS suddenly dropping out and freezing during
recording or playback? How do I fix that? I have JAWS running through the
headphones in my MOTU.

DPC stands for deferred procedure calls, it is how Windows handles interrupts
and calls to the kernel and driver subsystem. Since Windows is not a real time
OS, it has to schedule these calls to handle access to resources. Having a high
latency between calls for the audio driver will result in dropped packets or
extra buffering by the drivers into memory, resulting in pops and crackles and
eventually drop outs.
It?s more complex than that, but I?m just giving you the simple basic
definition.
You may have a tool called DPC latency checker on your DAW, or you can
google/download it. It will allow you to check your system?s current DPC
latency. FYI, this tool is not accessible with JAWS, you?ll have to use the
JAWS cursor to read its output, or have a sighted person do it for you.

OK. You may be experiencing hardware issues, or your NVRAM was reset and your
firmware settings lost, thus you machine could be experiencing high DPC
latency. Can you check your current DPC latency?

Yes, via a factory image that was custom built for me when I purchased the
machine.

You probably need Windows reinstalled

It started happening in 2015, the moment I started updating Windows! Until that
day, I was able to record flawlessly with any devices I have. Which is why I'm
now going to run Windows without updates, since updating just messes everything
up and breaks compatibility with JAWS.

recently? Or has it been doing this for a while?

If by DAW you mean my computer, I've had it since September 2, 2011. The
graphics card I have is the AMD ATI Radeon HD5400 series, though I'm not sure
of the exact model. I also have the Intel HD Graphics 3000. One of those two is
my graphics card, and the other is my video card, which I think also has audio
features. I also have the Realtek High Definition Audio soundcard built in to
the machine.

Hi, it's Annabelle.
When I'm either recording or playing audio within Sonar, JAWS sometimes seems
to fall asleep. Could it be that focus is lost? Why is the Focus Loss
Announcement turned off by default? How do I prevent this from happening? Also,
what can I do to prevent dropouts and stuttering, clicks and pops when
recording from my computer's internal soundcard into the MOTU 896HD?
