You might try loading it into an ocr program like open book or the kurzwiel 
k1000, which have virtual printer drivers.  After they print the document as a 
virtual image file, they can perform the ocr on it as if they were hard copy.

it and then scan with OCR, but a manual would take ages to do.

        Hello,

        I'm trying to read a pdf manual for an older roland instrument which I 
downloaded from their site. When I open the document with adobe reader, 
however, all it says is "allert, empty document." If I try going to the other 
pages in the manual, I get the same message. Any thoughts?
