Dear List,
When I was a child, I learnt Braille Grade II through a series of exercises,
well designed for the small children. There were few signs introduced, a
wonderful story and questions to answer using the Braille contractions learnt.
The book was from APH.
Unfortunately, today, this book is no more available in the institute.
I guess you are right, the exercises provided in the UEB online course, the
Braille Primer are not meant for children. I wish there is a simplified book
that can be used for teaching the children.

As a blind child in a residential school, our teachers customized reading
lessons. We learned the contractions as appropriate words were introduced in
the English language, a second language for us, and these contractions
typically corresponded to our age and ability levels.
But these days, inclusive education is the trend, so customization becomes a
real challenge for the teacher of the blind. Isn’t it?

Hi Roger,
Me too, and I discourage it when I see it, but ultimately we can't dictate how
teachers deliver their lessons. I'd say it should be pretty obvious from the
pace alone that it's not suitable as a teaching tool for any beginner touch
reader, let alone children!

But I know of some children in both Australia and the UK who learned with this
course.

All of the exercises in the UEB Australian Training Manual only
contain words where the contractions are those already learnt.
The ethos is that at no point is uncontracted combined with contracted
as this course is about learning the rules rather than learning to read.
The structure of the Training Manual was based (with permission) on
the UK Primer and is designed for adults to learn the rules of UEB
with the view to becoming transcribers or proofreaders. The UEB online
course available from RIDBC in Australia is based on the Training Manual.
This course is not designed for teaching braille to children.

I was surprised to see that neither the UEB Australian Training Manual
nor Ozzie Dots nor Building on Patterns were available whilst there
are other courses that no longer seem to be available. I'm not asking
for these, just commenting.
