Ottawa Canada Dear Catherine and List: Without seeing the word document in question I cannot answer your question authoritatively, but the apostrophes may have been what MS Word calls "Styled" apostrophes. These apostrophes are a bit more decorative than a plain apostrophe in that they may have a curl to them, either like an opening or closing parentheses sort of. When I was in grade school, opening and closing double quotes were called 66 and 99 from their resemblance to those numbers and when they're used in a Word document, they're called "Styled quotes." Plain double quotes are just two vertical marks, sort of like a double plain apostrophe. While this isn't an answer to your question, I do hope it explains how this sort of thing can get translated into mysterious Braille symbols. Brian Brian K.
