If only we could get publishers to release any files in any format for
any book ...

You've made an excellent point in the case where files are modified in
QuarkXPress itself. However, we can hope that the general move towards
XML
is beginning to make this less of a problem.  

It seems that many publishers who use QuarkXPress are already seeing the
value of using XML for their archival format.  Use of XML is being
supported
by various XTensions to QuarkXPress, such as Roundtrip and Xport from
EasyPress, that convert from QuarkXPress to XML.  If only we can get the
publishers to release their XML....
