I can't answer your page numbering question. However:
1. Codes in formatted view: I agree you shouldn't be able to see these.
How are you entering the codes?
If you are manually typing a left square bracket, then the code, and then a
right square bracket, Duxbury will treat the code as text rather than a code.
For Duxbury to treat it as a code, either use the F5 codes list or manually
enter the code by pressing CTRL+LeftBracket. In the latter case, do not include
brackets in your code – CTRL+LeftBracket will take care of these for you.
2. Volume division: 511 pages does equal 256 sheets when embossing in
interpoint. Exactly how you divide this up depends on national and local
practice.
RNIB is the largest producer of braille in the UK. It is rare for them to
exceed 60 sheets in a single volume, and 50 is more common. Much of the rest of
the UK tends to follow RNIB, so if I was transcribing that document I would
split it over five volumes, each volume comprised of 50-60 sheets (100-120
pages).
Keeping volume sizes roughly equal is seen as quite important by RNIB. However,
there is also a precedent for keeping sections together. Therefore, for
example, if the end of chapter 5 of a book occurs on page 85 of volume 2,
precedent would suggest starting chapter 6 in volume 3 in spite of the fact
that there are still 15 pages remaining in volume 2. This may result in the
book ending up in six volumes rather than five.
This is not a desirable outcome, but neither is splitting a chapter across two
volumes. Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast rules about which
undesirable outcome should be preferred! Over time, experience will dictate how
you solve challenges like this. For me, taking into account the fact that each
volume will need its own title page and contents page(s), I would leave it at
six volumes. By the time the extra pages are added the volumes will not feel so
slim. However, colleagues of mine elsewhere in the industry could legitimately
decide to limit the number of volumes to five and split the chapter.
To a certain extent it depends how easy the chapter is to split. If, for
example, there is a natural dividing point on page 102 of volume 2 (in the UK
this might be shown, for example, as a row of three centred asterisks), I might
be more inclined to end volume 2 at that point.

Good afternoon!
I have a completed document that I need to put Roman numerals in for a table of
contents. From then on, I want Arabic numbers. I would like for the Roman
numerals to start with one, but the actual page would be the third. I want all
the page numbers to be on the top right-hand corner, and for the Arabic pages
to start at one, once the Roman numeral pages are finished. I have tried
entering codes in both the braille and print file, and neither work. Aren’t
they supposed to be invisible? When I tried entering them, and switching back
to formatted view, they were still there.
So, if someone with a good knowledge of codes could get back to me, I would
appreciate it very much! I would like to get this document embossed tomorrow if
possible.
Also trying to figure out a good volume division. Including the table of
contents, the document, according to Duxberry, is 511 pages long. I cut that
number in half, because I am using interpoint. So, given that, does that mean I
can get to Volumes out of it?
