Hi Sandy,

I'll do my best, but again I have to declare a commercial
interest here - aside from being a Duxbury distributor.

1. For those on this list who are visually impaired, is
there a brand and model of laptop computer that works best
for you?

These days, there are virtually no restrictions on suitable
laptops. The three main screen readers have taken care of
that.

2. Probably an auxiliary keyboard would need to be used
because of the 6 key entry.  If so, what keyboard do you
recommend?

Not necessarily. If you cannot get 6 keys to work with DBT,
and as I explained in an earlier message, you can often
re-define what keys are used, then look at the Galatee at
http://www.techno-vision.co.uk/galatee.htm

3. The laptop would need to have a connection for the
keyboard.  Does the laptop you recommend have that, or do
all laptops have that connection?

The Galatee is a USB device, and needs no drivers. I
believe all laptops produced in the last few years will have
at least one USB port, usually more.

4. Are there any other software programs that are helpful
for basic computer braille training.

Take a look at Perky Duck, which is free from Duxbury.
However you may want to also look at Duxbury's Help files,
and the "Miscellaneous" section, then "Graduated Tables".
"Fingerprint" is for English-British learners, the other two
are for English-American Braille.

George.

This discussion fits in with something I have been
wanting to ask.  I am working on a project, which I hope one
day will be realized.  It involves teaching computer braille
skills to visually impaired students in India.  (I am
sighted.)  The software programs I would be using are
Duxbury, Jaws, Windows XP, and WORD, and the computers would
have to be laptops.  Here are the questions I hope someone
can answer.
1. For those on this list who are visually impaired, is
there a brand and model of laptop computer that works best
for you?
2.  Probably an auxiliary keyboard would need to be used
because of the 6 key entry.  If so, what keyboard do you
recommend?
3.The laptop would need to have a connection for the
keyboard.  Does the laptop you recommend have that, or do
all laptops have that connection?
4.  Are there any other software programs that are helpful
for basic computer braille training.

To those who answer this, thank you so much for your help.
