This is not strictly to do with the EA contraction but a query - who
comprises BANA? Are they all sighted, a mixture of Braille Users, or all
Braille Users?

Kind regards,

J Blake.

The query also relates to BAUK as well!

Good morning,

I checked with our resident braille guru and he gave me the following
information.

According to BANA braille rules DBT 10.7 uses the "ea" contraction
correctly in "reality," "create," "Seattle," "Minneapolis" and
"permeate." BANA Rule X, 34a, section (2) states that contractions may
be used across minor and/or incidental syllable divisions. Two of the
examples given are the words "Seattle" and "Minneapolis." Both have the
"ea" contraction in the examples given by BANA.

We try to make sure that DBT translates as closely as possible to
current BANA rules, if you are using the English/American literary
tables. Until BANA changes the rules, the "ea" contraction is going to
stay in those words.

In the meantime, though, if you wish to create braille without a
standard contraction you can still do that in DBT by inserting two
forward slashes between the letters that would normally be contracted.
When you translate, DBT won't contact.

Best regards,

Anne Ronco

The ea contraction also appears incorrectly in "seattle", "reality" and
"create" just to name a few words. I violates rules of pronunciation as
well as other significant braille rules. I've written to BANA about this
advocating for the elimination of this contraction. it's space-saving
value is minimal, it's similarity to the dot 5 and also to the comma
makes it problematical for new or slow braille readers, etc. etc. If
anybody want s to read my two-page essay on this, write to me off-list.
Just think of the decision-making time it will cut down trying to decide
to use or not use ea. Okay, I'll stop now. (smile).
