[duxuser] Re: translating print into braille

Hi George and others,

The people in question are totally blind, so it sounds like a wordprocessing program will do the trick. This does lead however to another question. I've heard spotty information about a utility which will allow someone to print directly from MS Word to an embosser, using Duxbury as the translator, but bypassing the extra steps of opening DBT and importing the file. Is this true? If so, where can I download this program?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

First, are those "several people" sighted or blind? This
might seem a tactless question to ask, but if material is
being scanned, it is almost impossible for a totally blind
person to be 100% certain of what was on the page. (However
an Optacon does help)

A scanning mistake could be made where it is as simple as an
o as in orange, becoming a zero, or vice versa. Or "Apt.
1b" could be scanned as "Apt. 16"

However, scanning errors have to be corrected, and to be
quite honest, Word or similar is best for this purpose.

Again, the type of material being scanned, and the nature of
the user are essential in making a decision about what
software to use.

I guess we really need a shade more information.

Hi all,

I know several people who might soon be doing work which
would involve proofreading materials which have been
scanned, and subsequently sending them to Duxbury for
translation into braille. I'm wondering what advice I can
give them about this process. Should they edit these
documents, i.e.
make corrections, after the initial scanning process? Or is
it better to do this in a program such as Microsoft Word?
And, does Duxbury offer a spellchecker or any other features
which are contained in MS Word? Any other suggestions would
help at this point, such as which scanning software, i.e.
Openbook or Kurzweil. is best for this type of operation.

Thanks,
Scott
