My two cents for what it's worth: I suspect it may be JAWS that's crashing?
I often find it silences when I close Word. I haven't tried the search and
replace with DBT and JAWS 18.

I'm running DB@ 11.2 and windows 10, and I notice that when I do any search
and replace activities, DBT crashes at the end of the sequence. I'mnot sure
if it is DBT crashing or JAWS 17. I just know that everything freezes and I
have to do a hard shutdown. This is happening consistently.
