You should create a second account. Also, once you get things up and running,
I’d try the APFS volume creation and install Catalina on the APFS volume and
see how that goes before committing your every day system to upgrading.

from the disk and low and behold it simply did this time
My guess is that all the flailing at the recovery process
started some background processes that must be allowed to expire
as one of the many squawks I got last night was that process
#such and such had the disk mounted which is quite normal in most
operating systems as one must not modify data on a drive that
another process is using right now under most circumstances.
Before I hopefully restore my home directory from the
Seagate Backup Plus, I might still go ahead and roll it back to
mojave.
I may also create another admin account for safety's
sake.
