alternatively, you can go to like say trash mailbox and press
command-shift-delete that will for sure delete all that’s in there!

I also am using a late 2012 iMac.
In apple mail I frequently get a message telling no focused item.
I have to get out of apple mail and this goes away for a while.
My other issue is I delete several messages and they are still in the list
until I close apple mail.
Is there something I can do to correct these issues?
