Remember that command-1 will always bring focus to the inbox, so try that if
there is no focus or simply toggle off VoiceOver and toggle it back on.
What kind of email account are you using. I've noticed that with Gmail
accounts, sometimes, the mail doesn't immediately get deleted by the server at
times.

I have to get out of apple mail and this goes away for a while.
My other issue is I delete several messages and they are still in the list
