Thanks Tom,I went to the local bike store and he had a very old Shimano front, nothing at all fancy, part of a mega-range group set, anyway it has a nice long curve and looks like it may work un-modified. He is also going to dig around the back of his store and see if there is anything else that would be better. So thanks.
