Hi Chuck,
Normally you press alt + windows key + S, in Linux, they call the windows
key the super key.
If that fails, you can bring up the run window with alt + F1 and type in
orca and press enter.

make a talking obstacle detector if you like. You can use the pi as a
router, a media player and a host of other things.
What sort of stuff are you interested in? Are you a programmer?
You can get screen readers working on the pi. You can have orca in the GUI
and Fenrir on the console.
You do not need any special hardware to get speech from the newer pis. Do
you have speakers or headphones with a 3.5MM audio jack? USB headphones
will also work and if you have a HDMI monitor with speakers, you could use
that too.
