I am using ubuntu mate 16.04.
I installed ubuntu gnome 16.04 and later installed inspired by Mikeś
posts the mate desktop allongside.
The instalation was difficult, in may the installer was silint and
altuough I can still see a few % I can not read anything.
But now it is very usable.
But orca did not start by default.
try typing :
Alt F2 orca ENTER
to try to start it If youre already logged in ,
But if youre not yet logged in the login screen was also silent.
Ffor me that is not a big problem, so I don know how to fix that.
I think I used dconf-editor to make orca start automatically,, it is
not anymore inthe orca settings dialogue. (SPACE+orcakey)
There was a bug, there was no settings file.
I copied it from ubuntu 14.04 to make it possible to switch the
language.
The file is :
/home/YOURHOMEDIR/.local/share/orca/user-settings.conf
I don know it that bug has been solved yet.
Another thing is that firefox sticks to its icons based settings menu
that is dead silent.
But if you manage to open preferences it talks again

Hi all,
Sorry to be semi off-topic, but I thought with all the recent hype Mike
created with his Debian Mate on Raspberry Pi, I would try and get Linux
installed on my desktop. I can still use my laptop for getting stuff
done if this all fails, but I'd like to try again.
So what are people using on their home machines? I tried Ubuntu Mate
16.04, and it won't talk (although BRLTTY seems to be working fine).
I'm about to try Debian Live Gnome, and I have Debian Live Mate, and
Ubuntu Mate 16.10 (Beta) to try as well.
I'd preferably like to keep it Debian-based, but if people are using
Arch and it's working I see no reason I couldn't switch..
I need to be able to connect to a wireless network with the GUI, so
consider that as like the point-earner! :-)
