If memory serves, The Document Foundation was founded and forked
OpenOffice to make the initial version of LibreOffice following
Oracle's buyout of Sun Microsystems due to concerns that Oracle would
shut down development of Open Office like they did to Open Solaris. No
idea whether this concern proved valid, but LibreOffice has long since
supplanted OpenOffice as the dominant office suite under linux.
And while I can't comment on the accessibility of LibreOffice with
Orca or how LibreOffice has changed in the last 8 years or so, for the
roughly decade I used it, I can't ever recall any series issues, even
with moving documents back and forth between school computers running
MS Office under Windows and my home computer running Open/LibreOffice
under Linux, though admittedly, I got in the habit of saving stuff in
.rtf to avoid any compatibility issues that might arise with .docx or
.odt... Not sure I ever had to carry a spread sheet between the two,
and can't recall any issues with doing presentations produced in
Impress and presenting them in PowerPoint. The biggest nuisance was
when Microsoft tossed out the classic toolbars shared across Office
97, Office 2000, and Office 2003 in favor of that Ribbon garbage.
