Mike,
Is there a way to pipe the serial communications with an external synth
through the GPIO pins?

Pi?
Hello Erik,
Nice idea. I have here a Dolphin Apollo II, a Dolphin Juno and a
DECTalk external synth.
It would be nice to be able to make a driver for speech-dispatcher to
use these, or for SpeakUp to be able to use them.
But, as far as I know, at least the Apollo II, and probably also the
other external hardware synths, all use hardware-handshaking which is
not available on a USB to serial adaptor. If that is completely true,
and I am pretty sure it is at least for the Dolphin synths, then it
can't be done.

Mike, how about an accent SA via usb to serial adapter? I have kept it
around for love but without any hope I would ever be able to use it. It
would be fantastic to find a way of using the pi to play infocom and some
of the old dos games either via ssh or using a synth directly on the pi.

Hello.
The reason a lot of us run the console only and never bother with a GUI
is because most of the time it is faster for doing the stuff we want to
do.
I challenge anybody to find files and directories, or move files around
with a GUI file manager.
The console screen-reader using the OMX code I wrote is fine but I have
not yet written a speech-dispatcher driver for it. As far as I know if
you don't use an external USB sound device then the espeak speech will
stutter as badly in Orca as it does in the console without using the OMX
code.
I have not yet bothered to write the speech-dispatcher driver since most
folks who want the GUI are willing to use a USB sound device and I have
very little use for the GUI myself.

Understand, It's a matter of application. I need programs such as
tonido cloud that only run on raspbian. I also like the fact that I can
log in from my phone and do stuff if I need to via the command line.
All the tutorials for what I want to do such as samba and donido are for
command line. Plus, I really don't need the overhead of a GUI when I'm
expecting my pi to deliver cloud service. It's convenient for me not to
have to buy and hook up a keyboard or speakers, either of which take up
more space and cost more than the pi did. Well, maybe not the keyboard
although I'd spend more than I had to to get a simple wireless one that
works via dongle.
The command line stinks unless you have very good tutorials or a prior
deep understanding of the ways in which linux treats hardware, file
systems, internet connections and so on. It can take a couple of tries
to get something right, and it can be unfriendly in the way it reports
back, but it suits my needs better than the GUI.

Hello,
i absolutelly don`t understand why all the blind users work via console
on their raspberry machines.
I have installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 with Orca and it works great.
Only issue i have noticed is that you can`t use pulseaudio, it doesn`t
work properly, not only with orca but also non blind users reported
this.
But when you reove pulseaudio, alsa becomes the defauld sound service
so that you are able to hear what Orca sais.

I successfully installed
2016-02-01-raspbian-jessie-with-console-speech.img. Does anyone know
if you can run Orca in order to use the GUI? Thanks.
