[TN-Bird] More Migrants

Like so many others, this wind has brought first of the season birds to our
yard in Smithville. This morning a mature Baltimore Oriole male sat in the top
of the trees for a while and then a mature male Blue Grosbeak appeared at our
back feeders. More Rose-breasted Grosbeaks came in too and at one point there
were 5 mature males under the feeders. This has been a good week with a male
Indigo Bunting returning to the yard, the male and female Orchard Orioles and
male and female Summer Tanagers in the trees, an Eastern Kingbird yesterday, a
Gray Catbird, and a male Hairy Woodpecker.
The White-throated Sparrows refuse to migrate and we still have over a dozen
scratching for seeds each morning. The immature White-crowned Sparrow, the
first to stay with us all winter, has matured to the point of his crown almost
being pure white. The only puzzling thing this spring has been the lack of
warblers coming through the yard. We had a little group of 3 Red-eyed Vireos
yesterday and a couple of Yellow Warblers and several Yellow-rumped but nothing
else this week. Last week Virginia saw one Northern Parula and I am almost
sure I saw a Yellow-throated but that has been it so far this spring. We can
only assume the conditions last year that provided little cover and food in our
yard for the warblers has caused them to alter their migration route in our
immediate area.
