I did a quick drive this morning to check on a pair of shrikes that I've been keeping an eye on. I've seen them at the same place for about a month now, and I saw one again this morning. Normally I see a single bird, but a couple of times I've seen two, and they're always near a large cedar tree which makes me suspect they're nesting. More than once I've watched one fly in and out of the tree, but I can't see a nest because the branches and foliage are too thick. The fields around this tree are now being cultivated and there's a fair amount of human activity near the possible nest site. One field appears to have been recently treated with a herbicide. It'll be interesting to see how the birds handle the disturbance. I also had 5 pipits, 2 horned larks, 2 savannah sparrows and 1 Eurasian collared dove within a mile or two of that spot.
