April 2, 2011 Alice Loftin and I visited the Joachim Bible Refuge briefly this morning to check for the Rough-legged Hawk that has been there at least since February 16, when Ben Britton observed it. Almost immediately, we found the bird in flight over the field to the west of South Mohawk Road. We watched it for at least fifteen minutes. At one point while focusing on the hawk, I picked up four Sandhill Cranes in flight adjacent to the refuge. They were headed northwest and disappeared from view quickly. The RLHA gave us excellent views, and I was able to note that the dorsal sides of the wings showed large pale primary patches, which are indicative of juveniles or subadults.
