Yep. We have to go through VSS (Vulnerable Sector Screening)
background checks for Scouts, obviously. Though Scouts normally
covers the cost and has an admin staff member to assist with the
process, and once you are in the system you can usually "renew" online
every three years as is required, which is a simpler/cheaper process
than the first check.
It is a somewhat onerous and expensive process, so I can see how
getting these checks done for literally hundreds of volunteers all at
once for a one-time event would be a showstopper.
Hope they can sort something out for future.

These are the _only_ forms of police check acceptable when working with
children and other vulnerable groups.
The VSS process contains such gems as "Ensure the form is printed on
legal sized paper" and "Mail your application to the address listed".
There is no shortcut for this.
Let's hope the Maker Festival can get going again. TPUG might even
