Great winter/spring juxtaposition at Burke Lake today. Tree swallows
are arriving -- saw six trying out the nest boxes near the dam. On the
lake in same location were at least 38 lesser scaup, five cormorants,
several red-necked grebes and at least 10 horned grebes. Two adult
bald eagles were flying overhead. From the marina dock, saw at least a
dozen great blue herons flying into the rookery, where the bald eagle
nest is located. It will be interesting to see if they can coexist. I
understand a similar situation at Mason Neck several years ago was not
harmonious.-- Carol Sottili
