Yesterday evening, I had a good look at a Common Nighthawk near the Court
Street Baptist Church, near the intersection of London Blvd and Court St in
downtown Portsmouth. The bird appeared, flying east, at about 8:35pm. It
circled the church several times before heading west, along Queen St. I tried
to keep up with the bird, but it disappeared from view. Anyway, a person can
get some strange looks when running down a sidewalk while staring at the sky!
Tonight, just a few minutes later than last night, I heard the nighthawk near
the baptist church again, but its voice was echoing, and I couldn't figure out
where it was before it stopped calling. I didn't have time to stick around and
listen tonight for a longer time. Wish I did.
Also, Chimney Swifts were circling a chimney across High Street from Saint
Paul's Catholic Church. There were about 100 birds last night. Pretty neat
little birds.
