Our apologies for the tardiness of this report.
With temperatures finally in the 40s and 50s after many sub-freezing Mondays,
more than 30 birders came out to Huntley yesterday. Birders in the parking lot
at the beginning of the walk were treated to seeing a lone starling harassing a
Cooper's hawk. Early birders saw more than 600 Canada geese scattered
throughout the wetland, but many geese departed for other parts as the sun
rose. Two rusty blackbirds were spotted at the beginning of the boardwalk with
a group of red-winged blackbirds. A major portion of the central wetland was
free of ice and several duck species were spotted after being absent for
several weeks. Once again all seven woodpecker species were present for the
count.
