There were 15 birders on this morning's Huntley Meadows Monday Morning
Birdwalk, and not even twice as many bird species. The day started with heavy
fog which burned off as the morning progressed. I'm going to blame the fog on
obscuring the birds, thus reducing our output to 28 species. There were
highlights, however: we spotted a large flock of Wilson's Snipe and one, lone
male Northern Shovler. As one would expect, our sparrow population is
mushrooming, but we have yet to see our first Junco. Odd, given that they have
been spotted throughout the County.

The Monday Morning Birdwalk has been a weekly event at Huntley Meadows since
1985. It takes place every week, rain or shine, at 7AM (8AM during November,
December, January and February), is free of charge, requires no reservation,
and is open to all. Birders meet in the parking lot at the Park's entrance at
3701 Lockheed Blvd, Alexandria, VA. As winter approaches, unsafe conditions on
the trails and boardwalks may cause a last minute cancellation of the Walk.
Questions should be directed to Park staff during normal business hours at
(703)768-2525.
