Today's Huntley Meadows Monday Morning Birdwalk drew 11 birders who were able
to spot 32 species. What started as a foggy, bleak day turned into a sunny,
warm late morning. Our highlights included 4 Winter Wrens near the boardwalk
exit to the tower, and two Kingfishers, one with a fish it was pummeling into
breakfast. We ask birders who will be visiting Huntley Meadows in the next
several days to be on the lookout for an unusual Sparrow mixed in with all the
other sparrows near the beginning of the boardwalk. Several of our birders
believe that it closely resembled a Clay Colored Sparrow. Our sighting was
fleeting, and there are no records of this bird in the Huntley data base, so we
won't call it, but we would be interested in any reports of unusual Sparrow
sightings.

The Monday Morning Birdwalk has been a weekly event at Huntley Meadows since
1985. It takes place every week, rain or shine, at 7AM (8AM during November,
December, January and February), is free of charge, requires no reservation,
and is open to all. Birders meet in the parking lot at the Park's entrance at
3701 Lockheed Blvd, Alexandria, VA. As winter approaches, unsafe conditions on
the trails and boardwalks may cause a last minute cancellation of the Walk.
Questions should be directed to Park staff during normal business hours at
(703)768-2525.
