What part of the country/state are you in?
Sounds like one of the many Hummingbird/Bumblebee Moths. Google these
names and see if they look familiar.
The first one of these I encountered many years ago was, I thought, a
hummingbird. I was catching insects for my Entomology class, so had a
butterfly net in my hands. I actually caught the thing, but when I
looked in the net I found no Hummingbird, but my first Hummingbird Moth.
It was flying with the antennae together, looking just like a
hummingbird beak. I was quite non-plussed at first.
This is the time of the year to find these moths.
Could it have been a European Hornet? These things are HUGE!
I do not think there are any hummingbirds (certainly not in this
country) that look as you describe.
Good luck,

Subject:New Hummingbird?
Tiny bird, about 2 or 3 inches long, visits my 4th floor balcony flowers this
summer. It is black, one with a yellow chest or belly. Haven't found anything
like it in books or online. Darts away before I can photograph it. No, it is
not a moth.
