Pat,
It's probably a Hummingbird Moth - there are a few dif. species in VA & two
that show up a fair amount. Try Googling Hummingbird Moth & see which one it
could be. Sounds a lot like one that we saw on the Blue Ridge Center walk
on Sat. Hummingbird Hawk-moth is one possibility & Clearwing is another.
Both nectar extensively on wildflowers in my garden.

Tiny bird, about 2 or 3 inches long, visits my 4th floor balcony flowers
this summer. It is black, one with a yellow chest or belly. Haven't found
anything like it in books or online. Darts away before I can photograph it.
