Hi Nick,
When I commented on the difference in size, I was referring to overall body
shape (plumpness?), not the length of the wings.
I've been observing Carolina Wrens since my college days (more than 35
years ago!!!!) and the males and females are usually, if not always, different
in overall body size. I'm able to identify which sex is which by the
sounds each makes and their behavioral differences.
Happy Thanksgiving to you too!
Sincerely,
Marlene

Marlene, Fred, et al.,
It appears to me as though the apparent difference in size may be due to
different positioning by the two birds. The rump of the further back (right)
bird looks higher up than the left bird which I think helps throw off the
perception of size of the two. In terms of sexual dimorphism (male larger
than female, or vice versa) is not strongly present in Carolina Wrens. If
you were to have a bird in hand you might be able to tell the sexes apart
from the length of their wing (slightly longer in males by at most a few
millimeters) or tail. That said, there is a decently high likelihood that
these
two wrens represent a breeding pair since Carolina Wrens tend to mate for
life and often stay together throughout the entire non breeding season
meaning one bird may be slightly larger than the other.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Fred,
The female is often larger than the male. The 2 sexes make different
sounds so you can tell them apart if they are saying something. The
does not really sing--at least not in the sense of it sounding musical, like
the male's songs; instead she twitters, chirps, and "grouses" (when shelooked
doesn't like something).
Sincerely,
Marlene

I was skeptical of peoples' ID of carolina wren at first. The tail
right, but never have I noticed white spots on the rump and back ofPretty

These were roosting on the side of a barn in Central Pennsylvania. No
comparative size was given.
