The essential thing about the keyboard is to use the arrow keys to replace
the left and right swipes and the double tap.
To move around the screen without opening anything as if you were swiping
right or left to move around: Press the combination of left and right arrow
keys at the same time. You will hear "Quick Nav on". To go back to the
active screen, press the left and right arrow keys together and you will
hear "Quick Nav off".
2. To move around the screen, set Quick Nav On, then use the right arrow or
left arrow repeatedly. Voiceover will speak the name of the app as you move
from one to the other.
3. to select an app or any action like "Send", "Reply", "Forward", make sure
Quick Nav is on, then press the combined up and down arrow keys once. This
is the equivalent of a double tap with one finger on the touch screen. You
will not hear any confirmation from VoiceOver as a result of the keystroke
but The app will open or the action will take place and Voiceover will
speak the first icon on the new screen. Pressing the combined up and down
arrow keys might take a bit of practice. I find it best to place the soft
underside of the tip of my middle finger on the gap between the up and down
keys. Then when I push they both press together.
The other important key combination to learn is the VO keys. These are
"Option" and "Control". You may need sighted assistance to find them at
first. These are the VoiceOver control keys. On my Logitech keyboard, the
Option key is the second one from the bottom left and the Control key is the
first one on the right of the space bar. I think they are both on the left
of the space bar on an Apple keyboard.
Once you have the VO keys, press the following three keys: Option+control+k.
This will start "keyboard help". In keyboard help, the keyboard will not
interact with the screen so there is no danger of accidentally doing
something that you don't want to do! However, Voiceover will echo every
keystroke and call out the function of that key or combination of keys.
Pressing escape will exit the keyboard help mode.
