Well, since Deborah has expressed her opinion, I will express mine, which is
that I agree with Deborah's opinion. <smile>

  Hi Vivian,

I don't think there has been any definitive decision on that. I have
expressed my opinion on it before and will repeat it.

Square brackets have a specific meaning when they are used, particularly in
nonfiction. They usually mean text that has been added or altered by the author.

Footnotes at the bottom of the page most certainly don't fit that description.

I think we need to be more sparing in our use of additional brackets and
parentheses.

  Just my opinion...

  Deborah

Are we enclosing the footnotes at the bottom of the page with square brackets?

  Hi Cindy,

Just one correction--no asterisk after the number.

Th rule decided upon recently is space, asterisk number and another
asterisk after the number. In the book I'm proofing when there is a new
paragraph after the footnote number (i.e., the return symbol (I'm assuming that
is sufficient, i.e., that I don't also need a space.i.e.

I am trying to finish up a book I I am proofreading. The book has about 200
footnotes. They are usually shown at the end of a sentence as an asterisk
followed by a number (e.g. *14). I have not been able to find any mention of
how to handle footnotes in the online instructions. If anyone has a suggestion
for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I doubt if this is the first time this issue has surfaced. Is there a
way to search the discussion archives to see if this has been brought up
before? I'd much rather use my time than yours to find out the answers to these
questions. Thanks all.
