Hi Vivian,

I don't usually put the asterisk before the number in the section at the
bottom of the page.

This is what a page looks like when I have footnotes:

blank line

page number

blank line

Mary had a little lamb, it's fleece *1 was white as snow. And everywhere
that Mary went *2 the lamb was sure to go.

* * *

1. The wooly hair of a sheep

2. Except to the grocery store.

blank line

page break

I guess I don't see why you couldn't use the asterisks at the bottom of the
page. But you mention visual clutter and so it seems unnecessarily
cluttered.

I usually use the 3 asterisks when, as in your example, a chapter or section
heading is followed by a brief quotation that is intended to be sort of an
introduction to what follows.

It's been too long since I could see a page, but I can see that it might be
a bit cluttered.

I would certainly be open to leaving them out in this case. Hopefully others
will wade in!

Deborah

Well, since Deborah has expressed her opinion, I will express mine, which is
that I agree with Deborah's opinion. <smile>

Hi Vivian,

I don't think there has been any definitive decision on that. I have
expressed my opinion on it before and will repeat it.

Square brackets have a specific meaning when they are used, particularly in
nonfiction. They usually mean text that has been added or altered by the
author.

Footnotes at the bottom of the page most certainly don't fit that
description.

I think we need to be more sparing in our use of additional brackets and
parentheses.

Just my opinion...

Deborah

Are we enclosing the footnotes at the bottom of the page with square
brackets?

Hi Cindy,

Just one correction--no asterisk after the number.

Th rule decided upon recently is space, asterisk number and another
asterisk after the number. In the book I'm proofing when there is a new
paragraph after the footnote number (i.e., the return symbol (I'm assuming
that is sufficient, i.e., that I don't also need a space.i.e.

I am trying to finish up a book I I am proofreading. The book has about 200
footnotes. They are usually shown at the end of a sentence as an asterisk
followed by a number (e.g. *14). I have not been able to find any mention
of how to handle footnotes in the online instructions. If anyone has a
suggestion for me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, I doubt if this is the first time this issue has surfaced. Is there a
way to search the discussion archives to see if this has been brought up
before? I'd much rather use my time than yours to find out the answers to
these questions. Thanks all.
