I was not really aware of that. I suppose my JAWS might have encountered many stars many times and I just assumed that there were only three stars. I am not sure I see a big advantage in knowing that there are more than three stars in most cases though. In an earlier post I said, specifically in reference to the Stream, that I think it reads all the stars but that it does not slow down, so you might have to keep count yourself. After having found out that JAWS only reads three of them, though, I am not sure. I would question if it makes a difference though. The point is to provide navigation points in a Daisy book. If one is reading continuously and expecting the stars to mean blank space -- and that indicates a division -- then if a chapter ends without a chapter number or any other indication that a chapter has ended and a new one is starting then there is a division and I don't think the blind reader is deprived of any information that the sighted reader is not deprived of. While navigating a Daisy book, though, and the navigation is done by skipping from bolded and enlarged stars to bolded and enlarged stars then the kind of division, a chapter, will be obvious. I am not suggesting that only three stars be used and be bolded and enlarged even if that should do just as well for most purposes. If the bolded and enlarged stars are kept at four then if it is really necessary to distinguish three from four stars that could be done because most devices, if not all devices, that read Daisy books can be made to move through words one character at a time. Nevertheless, even without my knowledge of my own screen reader to the point that I was unaware that it read only three stars when there were more than three of them together, your point is well made by the example of multiple stars being separated by spaces. My JAWS read the bunch of them. So whether I am correct that it doesn't make much difference how many stars are there or not, the simple solution is to make spaces between them. Then it won't matter if I am correct or not because it should be easy enough to distinguish three from four stars anyway. It might still be necessary to keep count if you really need to know, but at some point the volunteers have to relinquish their responsibility and turn it over to the readers.

Hi Folks, If you type either 3 or 4 (or more) stars right together, JAWSonly says 'star' 3 times.
