Proofreaders who started when I did, about 18 months ago, did an exercise that was scored to be "hired." Part of that exercise had us change the book title to 20-point and put it onone line, then change the author's name to 18-point. I think that's where that thought came from. I did it for a year or more as a scanner. Thanks to my proofreaders, our books have been done correctly!

Is anyone besides me sick of this topic? I am reposting what Carrie sent, and I hope everyone will read it and we can move on. Sorry to sound grumpy but we have talked this topic to death, and there has been some misinformation.Sue S.-----Original Message----- From: Gary PetraccaroSent: Friday, November 23, 2012 4:35 AM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: was Navigation what do members prefer? From Carrie: Adding navigation to a book allows readers to jump to the chapters, find sections and parts easily, that sort of thing. The way we indicate parts, sections, and chapters is by the font size. The larger the font, the more important the line of text. There's a small section in the volunteer manual that gives some parameters: 4) Use these font sizes: For the: 20 point + BOLDING Book title 18 point + BOLDING Larger section headings (such as "Part I", or "Section 2") 16 point + BOLDING Headings for each section in the Front Matter, & Back Matter 16 point + BOLDING Chapter headings 14 point + BOLDING Chapter subheadings 12 point Text in the body of the book----- Original Message ----- From: "Evan Reese" <mentat1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 11:24 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: was Navigation what do members prefer?Since the standard font size is 12 point, then, unless the chapter has subsections, its title can be in 14 point. As Madeleine mentioned here not long ago, a two point differential is sufficient for the Daisy converter. The chapter title need be in 16 point only if there are headings within the chapter, and those headings should be in 14 point.Evan----- Original Message ----- From: "Ann Parsons" <akp@xxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <grandcyn77@xxxxxxxxx> Cc: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2012 9:31 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: was Navigation what do members prefer?Hi all,Folks, the operative words here *should* be what is consistent for the DAISY converter! You *must* put chapters in larger headings font in order for the DAISY converter to know that this is a heading, a DAISY element! Madeleine's mention of putting chapter titles into 14 point font is really confusing. they must be in 16 point or they will not be recognized as a DAISY element.I think this whole issue of the stars is getting everyone all out of kilter! It all started when we were talking about chapter titles that had just single numbers instead of having "chapter" with them. Then, it's morphed into this whole crazy malarkiface about blank lines. The blank lines are immaterial! You don't necessarily need them between chapter titles and the accompanying text, but what you do need, what you have to have, in fact, is the chapter titles in larger font! This is a prerequisite for making a book into DAISY format. Please, let's not have any confusion about chapter heading fonts!Believe me folks, I've made DAISY books in the past, and these font changes *must* be made in order for the DAISY converter to select the text that indicates a new or different DAISY element!Ann P. Original message:In posting a response to Madeleine's explanation, along with my question about do I understand then that if the chapter title is 16 point Bold and the text is 12 point regular, asterisks aren't necessary, I forgot to ask what do members prefer? Given that the space is deleted and the texts are squished together--asterisks or nothing between chapter title and beginning of body. (Since in this book I've begun with the asterisks, I 'll c ontinue, but I want to know for he future. smile CIndy To unsubscribe from this list send a blank Email to bksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxxput the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the subject line.
