Ben,

Unfortunately when you connect headphones or use that jack for a line output to your PA, the voice guidance is routed there along with the rest of the audio. The good news is that you can set the voice guidance volume independently so you can lower it to the minimum setting. It still comes out the PA, but it's not blaring - unless you have your PA cranked. It's not perfect by any means, but it's better than not having an accessible player and running the risk of playing a track that you didn't want to do in your performance.

Also, you should be aware that the Plextalk allows you to set independent volumes for the headphone jack and the internal speaker. It's pretty much automatic in that when you have something connected to it, adjusting the volume will effect the headphone jack. The voice guidance volume is unchanged, but it's effected by the overall volume, both internally and externally. The independent setting for that feature can still be adjusted when you're connected to headphones, etc; you just have to mess around with it to get a decent compromise.

I don't know if there are other accessible players that allow you to not have their talking components routed to the output jacks; perhaps someone on the list may know if there are. The only alternative to this would be that if your mixer has facilities where you can temporarily route channels to another source, you could send the channel that your player's patched to a small amp or headphones; that way the voice guidance wouldn't be broadcasted out the front end. Now I'm sure you're probably thinking, "He's just raised the level of complication even more!". Well - you're right. The problem is that the manufacturers most likely weren't envisioning us using these devices on gigs.

Another thing with the Plextalk is that there's no way to silence the voice guidance from announcing the beginning and end of a title or file. I sent a message about it to their tech support people, but I don't know what's become of it. Supposedly they were going to have another firmware update late last year, but that hasn't happened either. We'll just have to wait and see on that one - but I too would be interested in knowing whether some of the other accessible players/recorders have any of the mentioned features.

Hope this helps you.

Mike

Mike,

Are you saying it's possible to have the Plextalk Pocket voice guidance routed to the Plextalk external speaker and the playing WAV file routed to the external headphone jack?

Thanks

Ben
